Guitar Technique Article on Chrono Delay DLY-4 by Jason Sidwell.

Jason Sidwell has been a professional musician for twenty years. Since 1998, he has been senior music editor on Total Guitar, Guitar Techniques and Guitarist magazines, interviewing more famous guitarists and writing/editing more guitar tutorials.

Providence Chrono Delay DLY-4

Although they have been manufacturing pro spec cables for many years, Japanese based company Providence have more recently become a hugely respected brand for high quality effect pedals and routers. From effects like the Stampede Overdrive SOV-2 through to the PEC-2 routing system, the discerning guitarist has had much to drool over! And as they continue forwards they bring new concepts to the market.

For example, with their Delay 80’s pedal now discontinued the new Chrono Delay DLY-4 pedal boasts similar aural delights but with several new additions: tap tempo, beat split, memory for two presets and their Vitalizer circuit.

The pedal is sturdily built with a dark pink coloured metal casing, black control dials and two metal foot switches. Certainly, it looks very striking and would draw attention regardless of other pedals you may have on your board.

From left to right the dials are mix (dry/wet), echo Hardness (reduces mid and treble frequencies, replicating the sound of tape delay), feedback (amount of repeats) and time (from 1 to 2700ms). Below the time dial is the beat split dial where rhythmic divisions can be selected from ¼ notes to 16ths and triplets inbetween. It’s not a common facility on delay pedals and offers echo types usually found on more expensive rack systems. Certainly, if you’re a fan of early U2 with the Edge’s reliance on unique echo repeats this will be of considerable interest.

Under the LED display are two smaller switches; BPM/msec offers two different display readings and A/B or TAP are two option settings allocated to the second footswitch. Interestingly, You can save two delay time settings to memory that are selectable via the A/B option. Alternatively, choosing TAP means you set the echo speed yourself via the pedal. If you want both options accessible, an external pedal can be connected for tap tempo work leaving the pedal’s switch for your two delay presets. Nice!

Considering their reputation, Providence’s sonic excellence is in evidence again here: the direct signal remains in the analogue domain with their unique Vitalizer circuit providing zero degradation at the output.

So how does it sound? In a word, awesome. The echoes sound very musical with the echo hardness dial providing control over the higher frequencies – the higher the setting, the warmer the echoes. Having the tap function was one of the biggest wants with the discontinued Delay 80 so with it added to the DLY-4 flexibility is greatly increased. From Surfer slap back to stadium rock ambient delay, the Chrono Delay marries ‘old skool’ ease of use with the functional flexibility required by modern guitar players.

Ramon Goose Interviewd in French Magazine "Guitare Xtreme"

Ramon Goose is a blues rock guitarist and singer who is well known for his band NuBlues in England. He also has toured across Europe and released several albums as a solo artist. Ramon sent us his interview in an article in the French magazine "Guitare Xtreme".
In the article, he mentioned the Providence SOV-2. Here is a translation of an extract from the interview:
IV- MATOS (Gear)
About gear, Ramon usually uses very high-end products. He uses a Nash Stratocaster (great Fender replica) and also an amp built by Tommy Cougar (model Mystic Blue Star). The gear addicts know very well about Tommy who builds some of the best Dumble replicas in the world. Ramon payed 7000 £ for his head amp and he is very proud of the Mystic Blue Star

Ramon, basically, what is your favorite "amp" sound?

I would say a good Fender Super Reverb. Also, I use rental gear for touring, I always ask for a Twin Reverb. To boost the amp, I use a Japanese made pedal built by Providence, the SOV-2 which is the only pedal on the market that can reproduce the grain
of a Dumble perfectly. On the Mansana Blues album, I also used a Marshall JCM 800.

Crisantes shows us his pedalboard!

Cristantes is a very popular artist in Mexico. He is a multi-instrument player and his instruments include the guitar, keyboard, drums and vocals. He also writes and composes his songs in English and Spanish.
Cristantes recently sent us a picture of his pedalboard that he uses for his live rig.
Here are his comments and photos...!
"I finally had the chance to use the Providence pedals in my live rig. I have to say they sound amazing! I was very impressed with how well they translated with each individual guitar change. I've used many pedals from other companies and they all seem to make every guitar sound the same no matter what, but with my new Providence pedalboard the sound of each guitar really comes through, adding so much more richness to every song.
Here's a quick picture of my pedalboard. You'll notice I am using the Vandal Bass Distortion as well, although it's designed for bass I found through experimentation that I can get some cool sounds for guitar as well.
The second tuner shown on top is for my acoustic guitar, and patches directly to the Countryman D.I. via a Providence cable. It's a very simple set up, but It works and sounds fantastic!"

Carl Verheyen enjoyed using Providence cables on his European tour

Carl was having problems with cables during his latest tour and we supported him from his show in France. He then replaced all his cables with Providence cables for the rest of the European tour. We received his positive comment on Providence cables. Thanks Carl for using Providence cables!!

"Halfway through my latest tour I replaced all my cables with Providence cables. After plugging my guitar into my pedal board using the S102 and P203 I immediately heard a clarity that wasn't there before. I spent the entire soundcheck trying all my tones and listening to the new sonic depth I now heard.  The show that night was truly inspired! ....Carl Verheyen".

Steve Lukather also used Providence products at the Billboard Live Osaka show.
Here is the setup at the Osaka live show.

Pedals and footswitches at his feet.
From right to left, Jim Dunlop/Wah Pedal-->ERNIE BALL/Volume Pedal-->Ibanez/ TS-9-->Providence/ADC-3(Anadime Chorus)-->Providence/ DLY-83(Delay80’s)-->BOSS/DD-3、BOSS/TU-2. The footswitch for the Marshall Amp Channel switching was placed in the center.
Providence/PAP-509DCJ (Battery Emulator9.6) supplied power to TU-2.
Providence/VLC-1 (VELVET COMP) placed before the Marshall amp, left on all the time.
Steve turned off the DEEP switch of the Providence/ADC-3 (Anadime Chorus) and use the DLY-83 (Delay 80's) for short delay. The purple patch cables are Providence/P203. The amp he used was a Marshall TSL100 head & Cab. The second one was just a spare.
Steves main guitar was the Music Man, Luke model with an all rosewood neck.
The cable from the guitar to the Wah pedal was a Providence/F201model.

9 April 2010
From March 1 (Mon.) to March 5 (Fri.), history was made at Billboard Live Tokyo. An outstanding band comprised of Randy Brecker, Bill Evans, Steve Lukather and Robben Ford with Darrlyl Jones, Rodney Holmes and Steve Weingart, well-known artists in the fields of Jazz, AOR, R&B and Rock, gave an inspiring performance.

Steve Lukather, well known as one of the greatest guitarists in the world, and also the guitarist of TOTO, used Providence pedals and cables at the Billboard Live Tokyo show.
First of all, Luke tried all of the Providence pedals before the show together with his tech Craig DeFalco. He was immediately impressed with the compressor pedal (VLC-1) and decided to use it for the show, and leave it on all the time. Then, he tried the chorus and the delay, which he also liked and asked Craig to leave them set up for the show. After trying everything out, he ended up using the compressor (VLC-1), delay (DLY-83) and chorus(ADC-3), along with several Providence cables (S102/F201/P203), for the live show at Billboard Live Tokyo.

It was a great night, we are happy to welcome Luke as a Providence user!
Thanks also to Craig for his support.

Yuki's Report (Chief Engineer and designer of Providence pedals)

First of all, Luke tried the Providence Cable S102. He said that the cables he is now using are not flexible and hard to use and he checked the flexibility of the Providence cables. He immediately said this is OK.
He had already used the patch P203 so I asked him where did he got it and he said that he borrowed them from Robben Ford!! Craig, his tech said "This cable is nice and I like the purple color". Therefore, Luke and Craig used P203 immediately without any trial.

Next was Velvt Comp.
Luke checked his guitar tone by turning the compressor pedal on and off several times. He tried turning the volume up and down with the volume pedal and he tried all the tone characteristics from clean to crunch to lead by switching the amp channels. Then, he said "This is great! Put this pedal before the amp!", and the VLC-1 was connected directly to his amp input and left on, and he used the compressor pedal for the whole show.

Then, Luke said that "Let's try the Chorus pedal "so I set the pedal up with Craig for Luke.
Then, as soon as he tried it, he said "This is good. Let's use this." and he tried it for a while. He played many phrases we had listened to many times in the past so I became entranced listening to him play.

He tried the Delay 80's next. He especially liked the Echo Hardness feature and he set it for short delay and turned down the Echo Hardness, then he set up an echo sound similar to a round reverb sound. He carefully adjusted the knobs repeatedly standing up to play and then squatting down to make more adjustments.

Luke said that he would use the pedals that night so I and Craig immediately set them up for Luke.
The signal chain was Guitar > Wah > Vol Pedal > TS-9 > Anadime Chorus > TU-2 (Tuner) > VELVET COMP > JCM2000 INPUT.
The Delay 80's (short delay) was connected in series with a BOSS Digital Delay in the send and return of the JCM2000. The Velvet Comp was connected directly to the input of the amp.

After setting everything up, Luke checked the sound again and he said "Really nice guitar tone, thank you very much." It was a great pleasure for me!! ...by Yuki
